Calculate Your True Hourly Rate (It's Lower Than You Think)

Your paycheck rate isn't what you actually earn once you factor in commute time, unpaid prep, work clothes, and meals. Calculating your true hourly rate helps you make smarter decisions about whether overtime or a side gig is actually worth it.

Your hourly rate isn't what you actually make. Here's how to find your real number.

The formula:

TRUE HOURLY RATE = Take-home pay ÷ Total hours spent on work

What counts as "total hours":

  • Hours at work (including unpaid breaks)
  • Commute time (both ways)
  • Time getting ready specifically for work
  • Time doing work-related tasks at home

What counts as "costs":

  • Transportation (gas, transit, parking)
  • Work clothes and shoes
  • Meals you buy because of work
  • Childcare costs for work hours

Example:

Job pays $16/hour for 40 hours = $640/week gross, ~$520 take-home

But you also: commute 1 hour each way (10 hrs/week), spend $50 on gas, buy lunch 3x ($30), wear through work shoes ($20/month)

Real calculation: $520 - $50 - $30 - $5 = $435 actual take-home

Hours: 40 work + 10 commute = 50 hours

TRUE HOURLY RATE: $435 ÷ 50 = $8.70/hour

That's very different from $16.

Why this matters: It helps you evaluate overtime, job offers, and side gigs accurately.

WHAT TO DO TODAY:

  1. Calculate your weekly take-home pay
  2. Add up your work-related expenses for a typical week
  3. Count your total work hours (including commute and prep)
  4. Divide: (Pay - Expenses) ÷ Total Hours
  5. Write down the number—this is your real hourly rate
