How to Get More Hours at Your Current Job

You don't always need a new job — sometimes you need more hours at the one you have. Be the person they call when someone calls out. Make your availability clear and stay flexible. Picking up shifts others skip is one of the fastest ways to increase your paycheck.

Before looking for a second job, see if you can get more hours at your current one. Less hassle, no learning curve, and you already know the place.

How to become the go-to for extra hours:

  1. Make your availability known

Tell your manager: "I'm available to pick up extra shifts if anyone calls out or if you need coverage." Put it in writing (text or email) so they remember.

  1. Be reliable

Show up on time. Don't call out unnecessarily. Managers give extra hours to people they can count on.

  1. Be flexible

Willing to work the shifts no one wants (early mornings, late nights, weekends)? You'll get more hours.

  1. Ask directly

"Hey, I'm trying to pick up more hours. Is there anything coming up, or can you keep me in mind?"

  1. Cross-train

Learn other positions. The more you can do, the more valuable you are when they need coverage.

The timing:

Ask about hours when business is picking up (holidays, busy season), not during slow periods when everyone's getting cut.

WHAT TO DO TODAY:

  1. Text or tell your manager: "I'm available for extra shifts if you need coverage"
  2. If you have scheduling software, update your availability
  3. Say yes next time they ask you to come in
  4. If hours are consistently short, ask if cross-training is an option
