Most impulse purchases don't matter 24 hours later. The urge feels urgent in the moment. It usually isn't. Waiting a day costs nothing and filters out most of the ones you'd regret.

That thing you want to buy right now? Wait 24 hours.

Here's what's happening in your brain: seeing something you want triggers dopamine. You feel excited. You want that feeling to continue, so you buy. But the truth is, the high comes from the decision to purchase—not from actually owning the thing.

The 24-hour rule breaks this cycle:

  1. See something you want (that's not a necessity)
  2. Don't buy it yet
  3. Write it down or add to cart without purchasing
  4. Wait 24 hours
  5. If you still want it AND can afford it, buy it

What usually happens: you forget about it. Or you realize you don't actually need it. Or you find a better option.

This isn't about deprivation. You can still buy things you want. You're just making sure you actually want them, not just reacting to a feeling.

Pro tip: Keep a "want list" on your phone. Add things to it instead of buying. Review the list weekly. You'll be surprised how few things you actually end up wanting.

WHAT TO DO TODAY:

  1. Open a note on your phone titled "Want List"
  2. Next time you want to buy something non-essential, add it to the list instead
  3. Set a reminder to check the list in 24 hours
  4. Only buy things that still seem worth it after waiting
