Build it $20 at a time. You don't need to save $500 all at once. Small, consistent contributions get there. $25 a paycheck is $500 in 5 months.

Sixty percent of Americans can't cover a $400 emergency. But here's what the stats don't tell you: most emergencies aren't thousands of dollars. They're $300-500. A car repair. An ER copay. Groceries when hours get cut.

$500 is the difference between "I've got this" and overdrafts, late fees, and three months of catching up.

How to build it:

  • Start with whatever you can: $5, $10, $20
  • Set up automatic transfers on payday—before you see the money
  • Use a separate account so it's not mixed with spending money
  • Don't touch it unless it's a real emergency (not a sale, not "I deserve it")

How long will it take? At $20/week, you'll have $500 in 6 months. At $50/week, about 10 weeks. Even $10/week gets you there in a year.

WHAT TO DO TODAY:

  1. Log into your bank
  2. Set up an automatic transfer to savings for payday (start with $10-25)
  3. Label the account "Emergency Fund" or "Do Not Touch"

The automation is the key. You won't miss money you never see.
